The 2010 AGM was held at BAWA Conference Centre,
Filton, Bristol.

The AGM included a vote on whether to start
contributing to the Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU). When the
LOCSU was initially set up, Avon LOC was very sceptical about whether we would
achieve good value for money from contributing to LOCSU, and decided not to
recommend supporting LOCSU. Since then the LOCSU has developed into a useful
support vehicle to LOCs across the country; some examples of their work
includes:
·
7 clinical pathways written, including glaucoma referral
refinement and ocular hypertension pathways which have been described by NICE as
flawless, and Primary Care Commissioning is advocating these LOCSU pathways
·
Engaged with 66 LOCs in contract negotiation
·
Developed bespoke University accredited training for glaucoma
referral refinement
·
Welsh Assembly Gov is utilising LOCSU training for the whole of
Wales
·
Cataract training is about to come on stream
·
There is day to day support for LOCs
·
Funded lobbying awareness package in run up to the Election
·
Produced regular news briefs and information bulletins for LOCs.
Given the significant developments achieved by the LOCSU, the LOC felt that it was appropriate
to review the LOC’s status with regard to the LOCSU. Following a very positive
debate within the LOC, the position of the LOC was that we would now support
becoming a contributor to the LOCSU. This would require a rise in the statutory
levy of 0.5%, and given that, it was felt that it was appropriate to put this decision to a vote
at the AGM.
The AGM vote supported the resolution to join LOCSU, and
was passed with a massive majority.
The AGM was be followed by a CET lecture by Bill Harvey.
Bill will be talking on “Red Eye and its Management”.
