The Role of Avon LOC

Avon LOC is a statutory body which represents the interests of local opticians at local health authority level and which contributes to debate on local health issues.

The area served by the  Committee covers the old ‘Avon’ county boundary, within which there are 4 Primary Care Trusts with which we liaise; NHS Bath and North East Somerset,  NHS Bristol, NHS North Somerset, and NHS South Gloucestershire.

Funding

The LOC is funded by a Statutory Levy, which is collected from the monthly payments made by Avon Primary Care Support Agency to registered opticians within the above 4 PCT areas for performing General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) sight tests.  These funds cover the costs of meetings, transport, project costs, printing, stationary, etc.

Some local opticians also pay a Voluntary Levy, collected by the LOC on behalf of the Central LOC Fund.  This fund helps finance projects which benefit the profession as a whole.  It does not finance purely clinical research, but will consider projects which may have some opto-political purpose (for example a survey on referrals).
